Stage offerings include Gershwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Of Thee I Sing, 1931 – containing the unforgettable song, “Who Cares?” - and Bernstein’s White House Cantata; films include Darryl Zanuck’s little-known, Oscar-nominated musical, Wilson, 1944.

Cold Titles for a Warm Winter
Get into the season with the Music/Media Library’s new exhibit, “Cold Titles for a Warm Winter,” an eclectic mix of music, stage, film and television titles from 1611 to the present. Composers Benjamin Britten and Ned Rorem both draw inspiration from Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) in winter-themed pieces for voice and chamber ensemble. “Winter Dreams” titles both Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 and Kenneth MacMillan’s choreography for the Royal Ballet. Cold Blows the Wind typifies New England folk verse gathered by Helen H. Flanders and Marguerite Olney, while I Never Has Seen Snow, by Truman Capote and Harold Arlen, cites the musical House of Flowers. Houston Grand Opera’s rendition of Cold Sassy Tree, based on the novel by Olive Ann Burns, appears alongside Nancy Mitford’s Love in a Cold Climate (BBC), two excellent Cold War-era films on DVD, Ice Station Zebra and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. Ice Rink, a zany comedy directed by Jean-Philippe Toussaint, rounds out the selections.
Library Staff Award
This year’s Staff Award, the eleventh, sponsored by the TCU Friends of the Library was awarded to Jennifer Terry. Jennifer works in the Periodicals department, preparing periodicals for the bindery.
Those who nominated Jennifer described her as “one of the hardest working people in the library”, “friendly”, “accepting any and all challenges.”
“She is one of the most flexible and hard working young women I’ve ever met.”
She demonstrates “an uncanny ability to successfully balance work and school, excelling at both.”
“Because of her location in the basement, she is often approached by lost students. I have seen her stop what she is doing and show students where things are on the shelves.”
“She has made a place for herself in the hearts of the library staff.”
Jennifer Terry began working in the library as a student worker and then accepted a position in the Periodicals department. We are pleased to present the 2008 Library Staff Award to Jennifer Terry.
